Dmitri Matheny Quartet + Mark Taylor Secret Identity at Cornelia Street Cafe

1 I might go!

Add to Calendar 2014-09-24 2014-09-24 35 Dmitri Matheny Quartet + Mark Taylor Secret Identity at Cornelia Street Cafe Two leaders, Two approaches, One band!

Dmitri Matheny and Mark Taylor come together to express two takes on jazz and creative improvised music as one rich, varied and connected continuum. Both bands feature the consummate rhythm section playing of Eric Revis on bass and Michael TA Thompson at the drums. Mr. Matheny’s set, featuring pianist Richard Johnson, focuses on music from his tenth release as a leader, Sagebrush Rebellion, which showcases new originals, jazz classics by Johnny Burke and Duke Ellington, and favorite compositions by Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow and Nat Adderley. Mr. Taylor brings Michael Attias on alto sax into the mix to perform a collection of recent compositions created to explore his current obsession with drama and narrative in contemporary improvised music.

Celebrated for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, Dmitri Matheny was first introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s as the protégé of legendary flugelhornist Art Farmer. Matheny has since matured into "one of the jazz world's most talented horn players" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Mark Taylor's work with Max Roach, Henry Threadgill and Muhal Richard Abrams, among many others, established his reputation as a go-to French Hornist in the jazz and improvised music communities. Putting aside the Horn for the composer’s pen, Taylor’s newest work continues the spirit that won him recognition from legendary artist Max Roach, who said, “there is no one dealing with the music the way Mark is.”
