Sean Noonan Trilogy Series: Pavees Dance, Bruised by Noon, In the Ring
These three releases are unified by several common elements, most apparently Sean’s self-described status as an "Irish griot, one who collects tales, legends, and life stories over the course of his journeys and transforms them into the raw material that informs not only his drumming, but the entirety of the music he creates.” More succinctly, Sean also notes “as if Samuel Beckett were on drums.” In 2005 Sean was awarded a commission from the American Composers Forum to premiere original works utilizing this "wandering" folk music theory, and in December 2008, with support from Meet the Composer, Noonan traveled to Mali with African musician Abdoulaye Diabate, researching griot lore from Bamako to produce the album "Boxing Dreams" that merges Bardic (Irish) and Griot folk (Malian) traditions.
Each of Sean’s three 2014 projects features stories that affected its musical styling:
Pavees Dance: There’s Always the Night is a dose of harmolodic funk/jazz punk that features Malcolm Mooney, the original singer in CAN, legendary bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and guitarist Aram Bajakian. The stories on Pavees Dance were brewed to serve this versatile lineup of musicians. . In addition to Mooney, whose striking vocal style in Can defined what has been cited as one of the most influential experimental rock bands of all time, Bajakian - the last guitarist to have played with Lou Reed - and Tacuma - the free funk prophet/bassist from Ornette Coleman's Primetime – fundamentally support lyrics that reflect the psychedelic spirit of the 1970s when Malcolm Mooney was in CAN.
Bruised by Noon, Sean's first solo drum release, travels through free jazz/improvised music in 11 “Improv Bouts” that are each chapters of an original story that can be read or listened to as an audio book (the final track on the album.) Sean even performs in boxing attire, explains that he boxes with the drums every time they meet in an attempt to pull from the skins a sonic palette of rebounds which evoke new rhythmic dialogue. Serving more as a philosophical concept, Noonan is always in the ring of time playing his very own character where actions of chance and spontaneous freedom delve from his actions as a drummer.
The stories that come from these discoveries transcend into his compositions and themes.
Rounding out the trilogy, In the Ring continues Sean's exploration of utilizing a string quartet as an extension of the drum set, which he first introduced in his critically acclaimed 2012 release, A Gambler's Hand. In the Ring presents a series of song cycles that are influenced by third stream/creative chamber jazz and which are also narrated by the composer.
Sean also took artistic tangents in the ways in which he packaged each of the three albums, releasing vinyl, CDs, books and audio books merging visual art, photography, poetry and the written word in various configurations to compliment each work. All three releases are commercially available at seannoonanmusic.com as well as at CD Baby and its affiliates.
Following the release of these three albums, Sean set out on an intense tour throughout Europe where his new works were received enthusiastically by audiences from Poland to the UK. There are few artists in any genre as prolific and unique in their offerings as he is, and we’d be thrilled to have you share your reaction to his music with your readers, either in a review or in an interview with Sean.
