Announcing a new concert of Project Hansori, performing brand new music in a grant-awarded program called "New Sounds of East and West". It's centered on new East Asian-infused Jazz, including our mind-warping take on an ancient ritual shrine ceremony piece -- or as I like to call it, Americanized, Koreanized, Chinese music. It's happening right in my neighborhood of Sunnyside, Queens, in the handsome setting of a Gothic style Episcopal church. I'm proud to say "New Sounds of East and West" is funded in part by a competitive grant from the Queens Council on the Arts. MORE INFO: This program entitled "New Sounds of East and West" will showcase a fusion of contemporary Jazz orchestra with East Asian traditional music. Project Hansori will perform works by Jeff Fairbanks, incorporating influences from Korea, Japan, and China. Supported in part by funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Queens Arts Council. PROJECT HANSORI, meaning “one sound” in Korean, encapsulates Jeff Fairbanks’ large scale work fusing Jazz and the music of various cultures, drawing heavily from certain East Asian traditions. This 17-piece Jazz band, occasionally augmented with traditional Eastern instruments, reflects his vision for combining different cultural elements into a contemporary, orchestral Jazz setting. The ensemble is a talented cast of New York’s top Jazz musicians and has performed at the Locating the Sacred Festival, CUNY College’s LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Flushing Town Hall and other venues throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens since 2007. It has also collaborated with taiko drummers, samulnori drummers, dancers, and other guests.
