This Jazz Standard engagement celebrates the release of his new ECM album, his first as a leader since 2001’s Dharma Days, and Turner brings his piano-less quartet featuring the fleet and forceful trumpeter Avishai Cohen and the expert rhythm team of Joe Martin (bass) and Justin Brown (drums). “With a keyboard or guitar, the chords are right there, so you don’t have to be specific about what notes each voice is going to play to create the chord,” says Mark Turner. “It’s more of a challenge than when you’re writing for horns without a chordal instrument, because you have to specify what notes the horns and bass are going to play to form the harmony. But I like a challenge.” Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street false MM/DD/YYYY
