Arun Luthra’s Konnakol Jazz Project will perform at the 55 Bar on Sunday, September 24th, from 6:00 to 9:00pm. Well known as a New York City jazz, funk and blues icon in Greenwich Village, historically the 55 Bar – established in 1919 is a prohibition era dive bar with great music.
Founded by bandleader Arun Luthra, the Konnakal Jazz Projects fuses the authentic American artform of jazz with South Indian classical music vocalized rhythms known as Konnakol. Arun Luthra is one of New York's leading saxophonists and composers, and an exponent of the art form of Konnakol. As leader of the Konnakol Jazz Project, he is one of the few jazz musicians of Indian heritage fusing modern jazz with the rhythms of Indian classical music, as well as drawing from a wide variety of modern and classic influences to create a vibrant new sound and style. Luthra has performed the music of his Konnakol Jazz Project worldwide, including in Japan, Australia, Italy, the U.K., and throughout the United States.
