A harrowing opening march and relentless Scherzo point the way to a heartbreaking finale. Before calamity there is respite: a melodic idyll that soars to ecstatic heights. The finale, with its shocking hammer strokes of fate presaging tragedies in Mahler’s life, is unforgettable.
