[generate] Jen Shyu: Song Of Silver Geese With Mivos Quartet, Jade Tongue, & Satoshi Haga at Roulette

Roulette presents the new full-length composition from Jen Shyu. Song of Silver Geese is a multilingual, ritual music drama composed for dancer-improviser Satoshi Haga, Jen Shyu’s core ensemble Jade Tongue, and the Mivos Quartet. The work is inspired by Shyu’s 12-plus years of study of traditional music from Korea, East Timor, Taiwan, and Indonesia.

Dancer Satoshi Haga is Shyu’s foil, as they switch and blur the roles of male and female in their portrayal of four main characters: a Timorese female warrior, the first Korean shaman, a Taiwanese moon lute virtuoso, and a universal character based on a Javanese shadow puppeteer master. Through both narrative and abstract, integrative music-movement methodologies, these four characters will interact as a microcosm of the parallels that exist in the universe and the great necessity for empathy among cultures, thereby defying assumptions that currently divide humanity....

Jen Shyu is an experimental jazz vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, producer, and Fulbright scholar. Known for her virtuosic singing with saxophonist Steve Coleman, Shuy has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Asia Society, among others. Shyu is a Stanford University graduate in opera with classical violin and ballet training.

Satoshi Haga grew up in rural Japan never thinking that he would become interested in dance. As a dancer, his works have been presented at multiple venues in New York City including Dia Art Foundation, Aaron David Hall, P.S. 122, and Movement Research. A visual artist as well as dancer, Satoshi held his first solo show of drawings and sculptures at Brooklyn’s SoapBox Gallery in 2013.
