Ignacio Berroa At Dizzy's Club Coca-cola May 29-30 at Dizzy's Club

One of the greatest drummers on the scene, Ignacio Berroa was born in Havana, Cuba in 1953 and by 1975 had become Cuba’s most sought-after drummer. He came to New York City in 1980, joined the Dizzy Gillespie Quartet in 1982, and remained the drummer for Gillespie’s multiple bands until his death in 1993. Berroa has also performed and recorded with McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, Tito Puente, and Mario Bauzá, to name a few. Tonight he leads pianist Martin Bejerano and bassist Josh Allen in a program called Straight Ahead from Havana. As an educator, Berroa has released the instructional video Master the Art of Afro-Cuban Drummer and books Groovin’ In Clave and A New Way of Groovin’, and his latest program, called Afro-Cuban Jazz & Beyond, is an overview of Afro-Cuban and Cuban music that goes back to the arrival of slaves in Cuba and explores the music’s mutually influential relationship with jazz.
