Having performed her "avant cabaret" songs with Mark Lamb Dance at previous Salons, Kitamura will reprise material from "Armadillo in Sunset Park", a solo album of story songs written for Mark Lamb Dance released in 2012, and will also bring forward her new work "Mermen of Gowanus Canal" in collaboration with percussionist/drummer Andrew Drury.
Dances for Kitamura's songs will be choreographed, structured and danced to by Beau Dobson, Jason Igancio Garcia, Madison Krekel, Mark Lamb, Sarah Pope and Jennifer Wilenta. The dance artists have a wide range of color to choose from each musician's pallet and are taking varying approaches to each piece offered. The dances range from set choreography to highly structured improvisations, as well as free improvisations that are inspired by dancer, musician, the seasonal theme, and audience.
Performances will be interspersed with food (much of it homemade) and wine, plus mingling between performers and audience. Kyoko Kitamura is a vocal improviser and composer who has performed and/or recorded with many distinguished musicians including Anthony Braxton, Reggie Workman, Jay Clayton, Steve Coleman, Jim Staley, and Taylor Ho Bynum. Mostly recently, she appears on two Anthony Braxton albums, the opera "Trillium E" (New Braxton House 2011) and the "Syntactical GTM Choir (NYC) 2011" (New Braxton House 2012). Also known for her interdisciplinary projects, she released her first solo album "Armadillo In Sunset Park" (KK 2012) last year, a collection of songs written for Mark Lamb Dance. Kitamura has garnered critical praise for her "great vocal range, veering from wordless vocalese to near operatic feats" (AllAboutJazz) and All Music Guide describes her as "an expressive vocalist who knows how to be quirky and eccentric but is also quite musical." http://www.kyokokitamura.com/
