During the 1930, perhaps even earlier, one didn’t always go to Manhattan for the Jazz scene Brooklyn was known for one too. Bedford Stuyvesant had one of the largest Jazz communities in Nee York City. It held many venues that housed jazz greats like Thelonius Monk, Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Randy Weston, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Betty Carter, Hank Mobley and others. All eventually changed, and jazz club fizzled out in favor of a different generation of music.
Debbie McClain, owner of Sankofa Aban Bed and Breakfast seeks to revive the local jazz scene of the past along with her partner Eric Lemons an accomplished string musician. Together they value the authenticity of jazz and selectiveness in deciding who to feature and when.
No bells, whistles or amps. This is Salon Jazz. Truly classic, acoustic concerts plain and simple every Friday and Saturday night in THE ROOM
You're invited to a magical evening of music as Debbie and Eric take you behind the scene of this undercover jazz venue. You can get there early and meet the artists, and other guests as you take a seat for a jazz fest experience of a lifetime, presented by some of today's best Jazz Artist.
DebbieMc never set out to own a BnB, but once she did magic happened. A Salon owner and hairstylist by trade when her grandparents 1939 home fell into her lap to save and maintain. Much bad energy once filled the property for a short time, but she knew that music would cleanse this 19th century home and restore what was good.
Debbie McClain once a long time piano student with many years spent in and around the business of entertainment. She is one of 6 generations, in a family of music lovers. She loves sharing the cultura side of Brooklyn with others. A lot of which will be presented by Eric Lemons, who is also an NYC Educator
Continuing the history of the neighborhood, a group of jazz locals and broadway greats like Blue Note recording artist James Spaulding, Pianist Lafayette Harris, Marion Cowings, Trombonist/ Euphonist Kiane Zawadi, vocalist Keisha St. James, Vanessa Rubins, Jazzmeia Horn, including actress/singer Boncella Lewis and Grammy nominated Bobby Sanabria plus Grammy winners have presented there and connected over the music, in a tradition diminished, but clearly still around. Keeping a funstyle from different time.
