Michael Eaton Individuation Quartet + Tim Hagans at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3

Individuation plays a final concert of 2018 at Rockwood 3 with a very special guest, trumpeter/composer/arranger Tim Hagans.

Michael Eaton (b. 1981) is a saxophonist, composer, and educator based in New York City. He embraces a progressive and holistic vision of jazz, drawing on its rich history and development with an eye towards future possibilities. Individuation combines progressive jazz with elements of classical postminimalism and rhythmic influences from around the globe.

Michael's 2014 debut album on Destiny Records, Individuation, features his original music performed by the Individuation ensemble. The band is joined on several cuts by a very special guest, NEA Jazz Master and saxophonist David Liebman. Veteran jazz historian and reviewer Scott Yanow (All Music Guide, Downbeat) calls Individuation a "rather impressive debut, the start of what will surely be a very significant solo career", and Vitto Lo Conte writes in Music Zoom that it signifies "a great debut album of a saxophonist and a quartet who seem to have all it takes to get noticed in the world of contemporary jazz". ...

Grammy-nominated Composer and Trumpeter Tim Hagans is one of the most unique and influential modern voices in jazz. His distinct tone was described by the Village Voice as “powerfully expressive” and Gary Giddins professed him to be a “swarming, spirited tour de force.”

His newest CD, FACES UNDER THE INFLUENCE, A Jazz Tribute to John Cassavetes is a suite of 7 musical portraits inspired by characters from the films of John Cassavetes. The recording features the NDR Big Band in Hamburg with Mr. Hagans as guest composer, conductor and trumpet soloist; it was released on Waiting Moon Records, Hagans' own label.

Tim Hagans performs and records with his own bands. THE MOON IS WAITING (Palmetto 2011) features his guitar quartet performing all original compositions by Hagans. THE MOON IS WAITING has been heralded by JazzTimes as “scrumptious madness,” and Downbeat as “an artistic success,” and described by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “free jazz with constant drive and passion.”

Jim Macnie of the Village Voice wrote: “Fetchingly situated between Brownian blasts and Milesian murmurs, the trumpeter’s lines cover lots of emotional breadth. It makes for a straight-ahead quintet approach that is quite willing to bend the rules to suit a tune’s forgotten corners. His poetry with standard ballads might hush this room. Evidently he does know what love is.”

Tim Hagans was nominated for Grammy awards for Best Instrumental Composition for “Box of Cannoli” from THE AVATAR SESSIONS (2010 Fuzzy Music); Best Contemporary Jazz CD for REANIMATION (2000 Blue Note) and ANIMATIONIMAGINATION (1999 Blue Note).

Tim Hagans has performed and recorded with Thad Jones, Ernie Wilkins, Joe Lovano, Bob Belden and Dexter Gordon.
