An evening of Jazz should surely include…..great music….but in this case it also includes amazing acoustics, plenty of legroom, a ‘soothing your worried brow’ ambience with an incredibly angled view of New York. If you haven’t guessed by now, you should because this place has to be on anybody’s top ten if not top five list of things to absolutely not miss out on in New York…Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, located at 1, Columbus Circle on Broadway @ 60th Street. Thursday February 4th happens to be a first; for the first time Veteran Hard-bopper and Be-bop connoisseur Mickey Bass graces the stage @ Dizzy’s with his New York Powerhouse Ensemble. Mickey has a long and illustrious history having been a ‘regular spark plug’ on the Jazz Scene in New York for almost fifty years, the roster of Sidemen who have come up through his Bands reads as a veritable ‘who’s who’ on today’s Jazz scene too. This time we are graced with a very special guest on the Vibraphone, who did indeed cut his chops, and became a ‘Bob the Bear-ctacher’ under Mickeys’ tutelage. A member of Mickeys’ Quartet “The Manhattan Burn Unit” recorded on “Another Way Out”, member of ‘Wingspan’ with Mulgrew Miller and also playing regularly with Dave Holland, the super brilliant and fellow Pittsburger; Mr. Steve Nelson. Rising on the horizon is Alto Saxophonist Brent Birkhead, a Baltimore native and graduate of Howard University who plays with Jimmy Heath and Al Jarreau amongst others, and is also a regular @ Bohemian Caverns, D.C. Rounding out the Band are Charles Davis Jr. on Tenor Sax and Mark Johnson on Drums…and the rest is History…...
