Newman writes:
In Betye Saar's exhibit "Keepin' It Clean", her art object of Aunt Jemima holding a shotgun painted on a washboard radicalized both Aunt Jemima and my concept of the washboard. The washboard is now my tool for social change.

Like V-P Kamala Harris, I was formed by the HBCU culture. As a Virginia State University campus brat and graduate, and professor at Livingstone College, I am inspired to celebrate my rich HBCU experience with the premiere of WashboardXT_Four featuring Matthew Shipp, Trashina Conner (a Howard U grad) and Stomu Takeishi. I will be using a new Shure drum microphone that picks up the subtle qualities of my touch on the washboard. I am excited to see what these great artists and I will create. ...
