Alto saxophonist and composer Patrick Cornelius, whom the New York Times called “a self assured young saxophonist in the postmodern mainstream,” released his third album, Maybe Steps, on Posi-Tone Records in 2012. Cornelius’ penchant for penning surprising, cathartic songs firmly rooted in the jazz tradition earned him the American Society of Composers and Performers’ Young Jazz Composer Award three years in-a-row (2005-2007), and the 2012 New Jazz Works Comission by Chamber Music America. Maybe Steps follows 2011’s acclaimed trio record, Fierce, which Downbeat’s Michael Jackson praised for its “compositional smarts and…centered warmth.” Cornelius, whose band has in recent years been featured at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, London Jazz Festival, and Pizza Express in London, and The Blue Note, The Rubin Museum, Smalls, Bar Next Door, and The Jazz Gallery in New York, continues to be one of New York’s most respected young musicians....
