Billy Strayhorn helped create the world known as “Ellingtonia,” but his music was a world of its own. Strayhorn, who composed the hit song “Lush Life” as a teenager, had already taken just what he needed from jazz, American popular song, and classical music when he first met Duke Ellington in 1938, sparking their historic collaboration of nearly three decades. “Strayhorn in the Foreground” will feature his suave, subtle, and surprisingly modern compositions for jazz orchestra. Presented by Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies at Miller Theatre on Thursday, November 21, 2013, the concert will focus on works Duke never recorded, including rarely heard pieces like “Cashmere Cutie” and “Pentonsilic,” as well as expanded, eccentric versions of hits Strayhorn composed for the Ellington orchestra like “Take the A Train” and “Chelsea Bridge.” The Billy Strayhorn Orchestra brings together some of New York’s leading jazz soloists to offer a fresh version of this innovative and influential oeuvre....
