Gabrielle Stravelli welcomes Sherrie Maricle to “The Early Set” this Wednesday, October 28, at 6PM EDT, to discuss her music and career.
Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, jazz drummer Sherrie Maricle is the leader of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, an all-female big band, and the quintet FIVE PLAY. She plays with The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall and serves as musical director for Broadway star Maurice Hines. After being told the trumpet was "off-limits to girls” Sherrie started her musical journey playing clarinet, then cello, and ultimately settling on the drums after seeing the iconic jazz drummer Buddy Rich play. She received both her Masters Degree and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Jazz from New York University, later becoming chair of percussion studies. Among many accolades, Sherrie was awarded the 2014 Ovation Award for Best Music Direction of “Tappin Through Life” starring Maurice Hines, and the 2009 Mary Lou Williams-Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award....
