The Jazz Passengers are a fantastical fusion of post-bop and musical comedy, once called a perverse mainstream hard-bop group as imagined by Frank Zappa. Their name, a take-off on Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, reveals the musicians wild ride along the eccentric currents in modern American music. Their roots come from the East Village culture of the late 80s early 90s: punk music and poetry, gender bending theatre, and avant musics of different types in the context of venues that allowed for experimentation with the support of cheap rents. Somewhere in this “downtown” universe they found a political / cultural / psychological world that valued stupid jokes and serious commitment to various types of exploration equally. From this world that the Passengers emerged.
