Known simply as "Krakauer" to his fervent following, the world-renowned, Grammy-nominated clarinetist is nothing less than an American original who has embarked on a tremendous journey transforming the music of his Eastern European Jewish heritage into something uniquely contemporary. The World of Krakauer: Three Perspectives of David Krakauer will feature the Krakauer-Tagg Duo: Breath and Hammer, with Kathleen Tagg on prepared piano; Krakauer with String Quartet featuring violinist Sara Caswell; and Ancestral Groove, a jazz quintet with Sheryl Bailey on electric guitar, Jerome Harris on electric bass, Michael Sarin on drums/percussion, and Jeremy Flower on electronics. This will be the first major US appearance of Krakauerʼs Ancestral Groove as the band prepares to launch their debut album Checkpoint in the States with two album release shows at National Sawdust on April 7 and 8.
Consistently defying categorization, Krakauer has collaborated with Dawn Upshaw, Itzhak Perlman, John Zorn, Fred Wesley, Music from Marlboro, Abraham Inc, the Klezmatics, John Cage, Danny Elfman, and Socalled. He has appeared with the Kronos, Emerson, and Tokyo quartets, plus as soloist with the Dresden, Seattle, and Detroit symphony orchestras, among others. The World of Krakauer provides a taste of a few of the many manifestations of Krakauerʼs talent.
