Originally from Shizuoka, Japan, Tomoko Omura began studying the violin at a young age with her mother. In 2004 she was awarded a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music, and upon graduating was the school's first violinist to receive the prestigious Roy Haynes award. Shortly thereafter, she released her debut album, “Visions”, which prompted Strings magazine to feature her as an “Emerging Soloist” in 2009. In 2010 she relocated to New York City and quickly made a name for herself playing with the likes of Fabian Almazan, Paquito D'Rivera, and the Mahavishnu Project. She was signed to Greg Osby's prestigious Inner Circle Music record label in 2015 to release her second album “Roots”. “Roots” was critically acclaimed, receiving 4.5 stars from Downbeat magazine and named one of the best albums in 2015. She has also been named a Rising Star violinist in Downbeat's Critics' Poll in 2015 and 2016. She is set to release her second album for Inner Circle, “Post Bop Gypsies”, in the summer of 2017....
