Tribeca Performing Arts Center

Standing geographically apart from most of the city's jazz haunts, the Tribeca Performing Arts Center (TPAC) is down on Chambers Street, situated within the campus of the Borough Of Manhattan Community College. Being built in 1983, it is just beginning to amass an aura of quaint nostalgia around its architecture. The venue's director Linda Herring took up her position in 1996. “I'm a jazz fan,” she says, emphatically. “I grew up hearing the music in my home and as a teenager I began attending the local clubs in Pittsburgh that presented a lot of the jazz musicians from the city and nationally. Because of my love of the music, I knew I wanted to help keep it alive, especially the music from my youth. I hired Willard Jenkins as Artistic Director of the jazz programs, since he is a historian. My philosophy is that art is not just entertainment, but educational, in the sense that it depicts our history through its creation and advancement.”
